Just occurred to me. Is this a problem with lease cars (I've never had one) that as soon as the 2 or 3 year lease is up you've got to hand in the keys and try and arrange for a replacement car to follow on straight after? If so how do you cope with cars like the Roc which have a long lead in time?

You know the lease end date so you just order the new car earlier.

Just changed my Scirocco for an SLK 250 CDI. The Scirocco was the best car I have ever had (previous cars included a Fiat X-19, 2 x 205 GTi, 3 x Audi A3 S-Line). After checking out a TT, Subaru brz and a Toyota GT 86, I was all ready to sign on the dotted line for a Scirocco TDi 170 because I couldn't find another car with the same combination of looks, performance, design, quality, practicality and price. I was finally put off by all the talk of a replacement on the horizon. I didn't want to get a new car and then find out in a few months time that a replacement was about to be introduced ( I would have been caught out with the recent power upgrade, and that would have been annoying enough). I know it sounds a bit superficial, but I was also put off by the lack of LEDs which have been introduced across the entire VW range with the exception of the Scirocco. Then I got a superb offer on an SLK (I don't really need four seats). I miss the cornering lights, folding wing mirrors, automatic wipers and auto dimming rear view mirror, all too expensive on the merc, but it really is a fun drive and feels much more special behind the wheel than the Scirocco. Two years down the line and hopefully there will be a new Scirocco with all the latest tech to tempt me...

Welcome to the club then and see you on SLK World website :-) I was also looking into Scirocco TDi 170 but SLK was much cheaper. However I don't like SLK and can't wait to swap it back for Scirocco.

But as many cars have a delivery time of many weeks if not months and without any definite delivery date how do you avoid the situation of the new car coming early and paying for 2 cars or it being delayed and not having any car for a few weeks?

If car is too early you can convince dealer/leasing company to deliver it to you a little bit later. I used rented car for a few weeks between selling scirocco and getting leased car. But next time I will try to synchronise changing cars.

As I said my car goes back in July and the dealer said they can get a new Roc in July for me, if not as I am leasing a VW already they said I can keep the current car until the new one is ready.

Two years ago before I got the Roc I leased a Honda Civic Type-R, I just phoned Honda and asked if I could keep the Type-R, for a couple of months more and they said yes.

Roc turned up Tuesday and Honda picked up Type-R Wednesday morning, only thing that worried me was the Type-R was uninsured for about 12 hours this time I will ask insurance company for cover for that period and always get GAP insurance if you lease as your insurance company will never give you full value of the car and the leasing company want the full value of the car back if it written off

My new A5 will be here in a few days but it has been a mix of public transport and borrowing my bros old golf tdi. I right royally screwed up, I knew when they would take my scirocco but I though I was getting a mercedes which has a reasonable lead time, went for audi instead and had to wait 3 months, hence 6 weeks on buses and driving a 16 year old golf.
I must admit I still like seeing a Roc pass by, especially the tail lights, nothing like it out there. In terms of design looks like the new golf gti is no match, but by all accounts will be a fantastic car.

I did ask the vw bloke if I could extend the lease for a year, he said no but suggested I get another vw. I asked what other coupes do you have? He said have you thought of getting a Sharon? I thought WTF and asked do even work for vw, do you know your own fleet and put the phone down. He sounded American and probably had a spare Sharon to shift, I bet it was brown too.

That's fair enough. I love my scirocco I waited over a year to get one. But I don't think I will get another. More than likely get a golf or something along those lines

I ordered a new GTD yesterday and it was booked onto the VW build system this morning. expecting it in June but towards the bottom of my build note it says "handover commitment date 2013-05-01 (first of May I take that as, using the American calendar).

Mine is a 5 door Black pealescent with no extras. It is so well specced that there is nothing I want on it as an extra. Tech wise it is miles ahead of the Scirocco and the final value quoted on the solutions plan is out of this world - basically it is expected to hold a minimum of 55.7% of it's list price on the final value, resulting in it being £50 a month cheaper than my Roc and it will use about £20 a month less fuel. In fact the final value is so much higher on the GTI/GTD than the rest of the range, it is actually cheaper to get a GTD on solutions over 3 years than the next model down - the 150PS TDI GT.

184PS and a £20 annual tax disc - amazing!

My main reason for wanting one was all the tech on it and to get something a little more practical - i'm always convinced my elderly great aunt is going to break her hip when she tries to get out of the front passenger seat in the Roc. Highlights are the Xenon headlights and LED everything else and the radar cruise control that automatically locks onto the car in front and maintains a minimum safe gap between you and them, up to a pre-set maximum speed.

Funny you mention the solutions final values....I noticed that yesterday and just had a chat with the dealers about it. Like you say makes monthly payments very good.

As I'm sure you are aware the final value quoted is an estimate and may not meet that in reality, leaving you in negative equity for the next car.

Personally if I were to take out. a PCP deal, I would want higher payments and a lower ballon payment leaving equity for the deposit for the next car.

Cuprabob: How can you be in negative equity on a solutions deal? If the car according to Glass'/Parkers etc is worth lower than the final payment to make the car yours then you just walk away at the end with no equity and don't make the balloon payment (known as the "final rental" on my agreement). The final rental value is non negotiable in the instance whereby VW will have stuck too high a value on it, making it cost more than the car is actually worth. They cannot do anything to stop you walking away from a car without making the final rental payment, it is not an estimate on final value and is not subject to variation from the value written into your solutions agreement - it is a contracted amount.

If i'm saving £50 a month then I could overpay and reduce the interest burden a smidge and risk paying more than I need to for a car having a market value less than VW's guaranteed future value/final purchase price, or I could stick that 36 x £50 in the bank. If the car ends up being worth less than the future value there are 2 scenarios:-

Scenario 1. I pay £360 a month for a £26400 car over 36 months and stick the other £50 a month in the bank. It has a final purchase price of £14400, but it only actually has a market value of £12000. I walk away at the end and I haven't lost anything, I have actually saved £2400 and have £1800 in the bank.

Scenario 2. ! pay £410 a month for a £26400 car over 36 months, "overpaying" by £50 a month and stick nothing in the bank. It has a final purchase price of £12000 because of my overpayment, but it only actually has a market value of £12000. I buy the car or I walk away, net result is I have zero equity, I paid out exactly what the car is worth even though VW overestimated the car's worth at 3 years.

Scenario 1 leaves you approx £1600 better off than scenario 2 (£1800 from 36 x £50, minus about £200 interest saved by overpaying in scenario 2).

I personally believe that VW are overinflating the GTI/GTD's worth over the rest of the Golf range, or are underestimating the rest of the Golf range in comparison. What makes a GTD hold 8.6% more of it's list price vs a GT according to the solutions final purchase price of each car? Yes there will be fewer GTDs/GTIs than GTs, but that is a big difference between the 2 models.

You can save a little interest by overpaying but the risk of losing out on a lower final value as a result of that overpayment is quite high when you consider that the GTI/GTD final payment amount seems disproportionately generous next to the rest of the Golf range.

Whitedevil170: The GTD has everything that the GTI has, either exactly the same or the GTD equivalent. They both have 18" wheels with the same worth (the 19" wheel upgrade is the same price for both the GTD and GTI), GTD has it's own Tartan variant on the seats (no red in the pattern that the GTI has), GTD has grey painted brake calipers vs red on GTI etc. The only difference between them from an equipment point of view is that GTI has split tailpipes (a single pipe on each side of the back) and GTD has the twin pipe (both pipes together) configuration. They even both come with a full set of carpet mats.

Yes I would get a move on if you're interested in a GTI/GTD. I strongly believe that the enhanced residual seen in the form of higher "final rental" figure may be a VW sweetener for early adopters who can expect little or no discount whilst demand exceeds supply and I expect that figure to fall to around 50% of purchase price just as it has done for the Scirocco from launch until now.

VW are bringing in price rises across all ranges next month according to my dealer, and he didn't say that to get me to close the deal, he told me after the deal was done just to reassure me that I will see price rises published but my order will be unaffected (as you would expect). Not sure whether GTD/GTI will be affected by said rises seeing as no-one will get their hands on one before the rise is effective, and it seems daft to set prices for GTD/GTI literally a month before a price rise affects it.
