Interesting "feature" on diesel start up.

Technical discussion such as Bluetooth, Sat-Nav, iPods, tyres, brakes, all that kind of stuff.

Interesting "feature" on diesel start up.

Post by Sootchucker »

Hi all, bit of a nothing really, but after 2 years of owning the Rocco, I this morning discovered a new "feature" I didn't know it had.

When turning the key to ignition, I usually wait until the glow plug light goes out then start the car. Well for some reason this morning, I didn't wait and accidentally turned the key immediately to the full "start" position. Well as soon as the glow plug light went out, the engine started without me having to turn the key again, i.e. it waited until the glow plug sequence had finished then automatically started the car !

On all my other VW diesel models, if you tried to start the car whilst the glow plug light was on, the starter motor would turn the engine over and attempt to start the car immediately (sometimes without success if it was very cold), however the Rocco prevents this and always allow the glow plug sequence to finish first.

Like I said, a really minor point, but I love the little tech things that VAG are implementing on their modern cars :D

11 plate (march 2011). Just tried it again at lunch and same result. Get in, turn the key fully on (as if you we're starting a petrol), release, then after a second or so after the glow lights have extinguished, the car starts automatically, which means I can be putting my seat belt on whilst the car sorts out the starting without having to wait and look at the dash. Pretty cool really.

Mines a 2012 and i tried this, the car starts if i turn the key straight away and the glow plug light gos out a few seconds after the engine has started so it must be model specific.
