Sorry another newbie with loads of questions!
Firstly im looking to buy a used sirocco and have a budget of 12,000.
What are peoples thoughts on where to buy the car from? Either a main dealer, non vw dealer, or privatley. Obviously there is a price difference ad warrenties etc to think about but would anyone buy a car privatley for that sort of price? or would you go for the piece of mind of a main dealer and get a higher millage lower spec car?
Secondly after having test driven the 2.0 tdi, the 1.4 tsi, & the 2.0 tsi and coming to the conclusion there are all great i cant quite make up my mind which engine is best for me. I dont do alot of miles a year but my comute to work is 20miles each way. What are peoples thoughts on weather the desiel would be pointless for me.
Finally the 1.4 tsi? Would anyone buy a used one considering the misfire problems ascociated with this engine.

Hi, I wouldn't hesitate in recommending the 1.4 (160) tsi. I've had one since new, Dec 2009. It has been a joy to own. Its done 22500 miles so far and just keeps getting better. I get 40 mpg overall, not much city driving. Mainly A roads and M ways. I'd recommend one with full main dealer service history to make sure it's had all necessary software updates. If you buy one privately you can always buy an extended warranty from a number of sources. I hope you find one you like and I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

If your looking at a used car and do a twenty mile commute a day a diesel will be perfect. The issue with 'you need to do lots of miles to justify a diesel' only really applies when they are brand new as they cost more than equivelant petrol units.
The TDI's are brilliant to drive, cost same to maintain and insure and you will be getting mid to upper fifties in the mpg rather than 40. For ecconomy alone its a no-brainer as a used purchase as the price differential disappears.
The only strong argument for a used petrol is if out and out power is your requirement as a diesel cannot compete with an R in that area.

You get mid to upper fifties from a 170 TDi? I'm lucky if I get above 45 mpg from mostly long motorway runs!!

Same here in my 170 TDi. Only done 2000 miles so far however and hope it gets better as time goes on and the weather warms up.
Thought the diesel was cheaper than the 2.0tsi new too.

If you go over 70 on the motorway you will pay the price in mpg.

Hi James,
whichever model you get,try to avoid one with a 7 speed DSG....
Mine is just over 30k miles and this complicated, computer controlled gadget is playing up. And i am a normal driver too, never thrash it or do track days.
