Have had my 1.4 TSI 160 less than 3 months, pulled off my drive to head to work today and was shocked to see a horrendous amount of blue smoke piling out of the exhaust and a terrible burning smell, popped the hood and by the looks of things the gasket and turbo may have both gone, covered in oil, anyone had anything like this happen before?
Very shocked as I have not even given it the beans yet and have been getting 50+ mpg on most commutes .
Being collected by the dealer tomorrow as under warranty but really not happy and slightly worried about what may happen over the next year. Any suggestions on what to look out for and if it may even be worth while handing it back and looking at another model?
Most likely cause is the nut holding the turbo vane spindle in place has fallen off allowing oil out of the turbo bearing. You are not the first for it to come undone. New turbo coming your way most likely. (Chasing the nut may be fun for them as it has to be found in the down flow ducting to the engine unless it is still at the turbo spindle area.) And hence don't run the engine again.
If the Turbo is damaged, they will also fit a new oil supply pipe to the turbo, a new oil pump feed pipe and the crank case breather pipe. Its usually a restriction in the supply pipe or oil pump feed pipe that causes it. And they will clean out the oil sump while checking big end bearings 2 & 3 and crankshaft bearing No.3. This may result in a new crank and bearing shells as appropriate,ie. Big end No2 & 3 plus the No.3 crankshaft bearing or all the bearing shells if the crank is replaced.
If the oil contamination is bad into the exhaust, then the Cat and both lambda probes may also be changed.

Thank you mate, really appreciate the info, I'll make sure I mention that to the dealer as I want to ensure this is resolved correctly without me having to worry about any further damages!
Tell them to look at TPI 2020782/11, 13 Aug 2012. Its a long standing problem that sometimes occurs on the 1.4 Twin charged back to the beginning in the 150PS/170PS variants of the Golf 5.

50+ mpg out of a 1.4 TSI 160 ???
I'd be very surprised if you got that. VW's quoted maximum, under ideal conditions is only 52 mpg and you wouldn't expect to get any where near the quoted mpg figures from a manufacturer. Even more so on a new engine that hasn't been fully run in yet.
In over 3 years of running mine the best I've ever got is 42 mpg.
Maybe something wasn't right with your engine from the start.
Aye mate I managed 53 mpg last week, I've got photographic evidence of 50mpg as I was very shocked myself but I found driving at 60mph on the motorways when I'm doing 80 miles per day easily made those figures. I was hitting 50 every day.
I will mention it next time I speak to the dealer although my fathers mate at Aston Martin showed me a photo of 68 mpg from his 1.4 160 on a run up to the lake district from Warwick!
To be fair to VW, I've managed to achieve the published figures quite easily in my 170 TDI and also my previous R32, although with a little more difficulty in the latter.
Im not sure what the offical MPG is for the 170TDi, however I get 60-62mpg average when travelling for work which im really happy with compared to my old BMW 3.0 Diesel which got mid 20's!
The mpg reference here was against the 160PS's fault, not a general mpg discussion, 170 mpg is discussed here..... 170PS mpg.

Well I returned from Brussels today to find my car fully repaired under the warranty so very pleased, the only other problem now is getting to Nottingham from Sutton Coldfield in this dreadful weather somehow to collect it!

Just out of curiosity with regards to the above comments about the 1.4 TSI 160 MPG, since having the turbo and other components replaced, I have not yet been able to get above 43 mpg. Could this generally be due to the fact that the components could still be breaking in?, Or 52-53 mpg doing 60 mph on a 25 mile commute each day previously could have been down to an underlying issue with the Turbo etc?
Would be interested to get opinions on this, and would also be interested to see if my MPG goes up over the next week!
43 mpg is more typical. I suspect the higher mpg figure as Zeph commented ("Maybe something wasn't right with your engine from the start.") was because your turbo was either stuck or almost siezed. Your power boost coming from the switched supercharger only. In cruise supercharger would be switched out so the Scirocco was running more like a basic engine only hence the higher mpg.
If anything, beside mpg change, I'd expect you to comment how much more engine "pull" there is above 2,500 rpm than before.

I have not really noticed that much of a difference with pull which is worrying, I luckilly met with the Director for VW UK group parts and service David Vardy at Autosport a couple of weeks back and he advised me to give him a call if anything did not seem right, so I think I might use that life line this evening to see what he thinks and if he can get it looked at and tested.
I will be very dissapointed if this has not been repaired to the correct standard.
