Unit/Box below under accelerator Pedal

Post by dimexi »

Hi guys,
This is my first question on this forum, so forgive any faux pas(s), and I hope the question doesn't sound stupid.

I got a second hand Scirocco GT (2.0l Tsi Manual) November last year, 2.5 yrs old and drives like a dream. However, I am trying to get to know everything about it - I believe it's good practice for a driver to be familiar (at least fundamentally) with every major part of his car.

Having said that - there is a little black box situated underneath the accelerator pedal in my car. It has wires coming out of it, but I havent managed to trace where it goes. This REALLY bugs me because I dont know what it does, and why it's situated in the cabin underneath the accelerator.
I don't know other GT owners to compare notes with either.

If noone knows what it is, I can post pictures later.

Any help appreciated

Could be either the CAN Gateway module or the On-board Supply control module, I's sure Chris (RW1) will be along to correct me :D

The Scirocco wiring is based upon CAN Bus technology (much like computers on a network). The car has quite a number of these modules or "computers" scattered around the car connected by the CAN network system. This reduces the wiring required, lightens considerably the car wiring harnesses and speeds up data communications. It's quite a system.

*edit* - Sorry just re-read your post are you saying above the accelerator pedal (i.e. under the dash), or directly behind the accelerator pedal ? If it's the latter, then it's part of the pedal itself as the units are fly by wire and it's the control unit for the pedal itself.

Thanks for your detailed reply sootchucker, I meant below the pedal.

HowardB - I have a picture on my phone, I will try and get it uploaded on the site. Sorry for my late reply, I found out yesterday that my 'roc absolutely hates snow :p... We are both safe though, no mishaps, just that my tyres might be bald now

I realise I wrote "below under" in the thread topic .. I meant to write only one of them

Mine looks the same. It's perfectly normal. Just part of the accelerator pedal.
