New Rocco owner, few questions

Post by Tyranical »

Hi all!

Just bought a 2.0 tsi scirocco (58 plate) and I love it to bits!

I have a few questions though:

Bluetooth - I'm not sure if it has bluetooth or not, there is bluetooth under the option menu but then it doesn't find my iphone 5 when I have them both turned on?

MDI cable - There is just 1 cable in there and then I plugged my iphone usb cable into it, again it doesn't find my iphone when I do this? How would i get an iphone 5 to work and through the mdi cable what kind of activity is possible?

Lights - sadly it doesn't have xenons and coming from a cooper S i miss them, more for the looks as I find the oem bulbs bright enough for illuminating the road... What is the best LEGAL (so no HID) bulbs to get that have the white colour of xenons and offer good lighting?

Cruise Control - Sadly it also does not have cruise control but I have read that this is cheap to get retrofitted, where is the best place to take it to have this done and how much is it likely to cost?

Many thanks!

Matt

Welcome Tyranical!

Re the lights - I fitted the H7 Philips X-Treme Visions as the main beam and H7 Philips Blue Visions as the dipped beam/DRLs in mine. They are a certainly a whiter light than the oem's and imo give plenty of illumination for night driving. Had them in since I got the car and they're still going strong!

Sorry I can't comment on the other items ;)

Hi Tyranical, welcome to the forum.

If you say that the Bluetooth menu is there in the DIS screen (the small screen between the speedo and rev counter), then it seems you do indeed have Bluetooth. Out of interest what sort of head unit do you have ? If its the Nav unit, (RNS-510) or the standard RCD-510, then just because they have "Tele" buttons, doesn't mean you have Bluetooth fitted. As I said if its in the DIS screen then its highly likely.

If I remember rightly, it's the iPhone that needs to search for the car. Switch the ignition on, then go to the bluetooth menu on the DIS and "add a phone" or something like that. within the first minute or so on the iPhone, go to settings ,General, Bluetooth, and scan for the Bluetooth unit. It should come up as something like "VW PHONE". Enter the code that the car asks for and it should pair.

MDI cable. There is a specific apple device cable from VW that connects to the dock connector on the phone. This gives you instant access to all the music with playlists, track names etc fully displayed on the head unit. All tracks are searchable on the head unit via Artist, playlist, album etc. the iphone/ ipod is fully controllable from the headunit or steering wheel controls, and it charges at the same time. Works really well. About a tenner from fleabay.

There's a couple of users knocking about that can supply aftermarket and road legal bulbs for the Rocco. Pease don't be a chav and fit aftermarket Xenons into the standard headlights. It's totally illegal and blinds other motorists (as you can see its a pet peev of mine :hyper: )

Finally cruise, as I understand it VW dealers were doing this for £150-200 mark. Not sure where you are in the country, but Awesome GTi in Manchester comes highly recommended (VAG specialists), and can fit for a similar price.

Hope this helps.

Bluetooth - with the age of your car, if it has Bluetooth, it will only support rSAP phones like old Nokias and is not compatible with the iPhone.

MDI - when the car is new it is supplied with 2 MDI cables, the USB you have and the iPhone/ iPod one which is
Part No 000 051 446 C. This cable supports iPhone 4/4s but you can connect your Iphone 5 with a lightning connector.

Thanks for responses all, I am in chester so manchester isn't too far to be going!

Is there no way to make the bluetooth compatible? thats a bummer! :(

So for the cable if I buy the other half of the cable off ebay and get a lightning connector then that'll do the job? and throught that cable I can only control audio music etc not phonecalls correct?

You can replace the Bluetooth module with the version fitted to later cars.

Yes, you can only control audio through MDI

How expensive are the bluetooth modules to buy/fit?

Also, the exhaust tips - the ones on mine are dirty and not going to come clean as its obviously been left on for an extended period, can I just buy the tips or do you have to buy the full exhaust? if so how much?

Cheers,

Matt

If you do a search on here for 'Yeti Tips' you'll find loads of info on the exhaust. Got them fitted to mine. Cheap, quick fit and look good. Given the age of your car and depending on your spec, you may not have had the chrome exhaust to begin with so wouldn't clean up to much.

It is very possible mine never had them as they don't look like they were ever chrome I just thought they must be really dirty, so I just buy them and they slide over the top of the original tip? sounds pretty straight forward!

:welcome:

exhaust tips, I don't believe the 2.0TSI exahust is separate tips they are part of the exhaust, get at it with some wire wool (carefully), autosol on a soft cloth & elbow grease!

bluetooth as above yes yours will be rsap only, see http://www.sciroccocentral.co.uk/roccop ... _Bluetooth" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; on how to change out the box so its proper bluetooth

mdi again as above, you need a cable such as http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-SEAT-SKODA ... 3f21126929" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; + lightning connector, as you've found you can't use your apple cable plugged into the usb mdi

cruise again as above yours is the cheaper retrofit, should be approx £150 to install from the dealer, highly recommend.

Hi all,

Think I know what i'm doing with cruise control, bulbs and exhaust tips - still unsure on bluetooth.

I don't even know if I've got it? on the touchscreen display, When I press I think its Setup and maybe another button and I get a menu with various options on, and there are two tick boxes on it, 1 says "activate bluetooth audio" and the other activates the aux port.

Does that mean I have it or is that option just there even if I don't?

Bluetooth - if you have the factory device it will be under the drivers seat housed in a strofoam casing. Just reach under the seat and feel for it... failing that some retro kits can be mounted in the head unit recess.
