Potential purchase, couple of questions.
Hi all.
There is a car I quite fancy however I have a few queries about it.It's a 2.0 TSI GT 2010. I'm slightly concerned as having looked into the car's history I discovered it'd been serviced at 8k miles which seems low to me. Am I correct? Is this iffy? It's now at 16k miles and the service light is showing. Should the garage service it before selling it? Is it stupid to buy a car that I'll have to service straight away?
Also I think it was owned by someone as a company car, they haven't really looked after it very well. It's covered in scratches particularly on the door sills. Sadly on my budget I can't really be too picky so I'd hope I could get some of these polished out however my main concern is has this person had this car as a company car for two years then gotten a new one and has it just been hammered? I doubt they would have taken the time to run the engine in and probably went all out in it straight away. Do you think this could cause problems down the line? Or am I over worrying? I'm being extra careful as it's not from a main VW dealer.
Thanks very much in advance.

With regards to the servicing it could be on time and distance regime, meaning that it's serviced every 10k miles or 12 months which is earliest. The car could have been serviced at 12 months and would be due another one this year after another 12 months. \\It's a 2010 car which makes sense. Mileage is irrelevant in this case.

As Cuprabob says, first will be because its on annual service, so it hit 8K miles at year one. Mine only had 7k year one and a further 5k year two. Points to genuine mileage which is re-assuring given the condition you describe.
Scuffs on the sill are easy to damage. Just lack of care. Could consider a little set aside (~£400 for both sides without seeing the actual issues) to repair or cover with the larger VW plain black sill covers as here or insist (if a dealer) that its part of the purchase deal to put right. It may be in that state now but to clinch the deal.... depends how much they want to move the car on.
Run in? Sounds like it may not have, but the driver(s) could have easily been doing normal driving anyway which won't have harmed the running process greatly. Its the risk you will take with any secondhand car. You counter it with a warranty policy to cover the engine and gearbox minimum to lessen the pain if it occurs.

One thing to add - i'd be wanting the dealer to do the service before he sells it to you - the car is asking for a service now, so they should service it. If it's been a company car and it has only done 8k miles per year on average then it would seem to me it has been a perk car, just used for the daily commute, rather than a neccessity company car used by reps etc to travel as part of their job, so wouldn't suggest it's been thrashed. Can you verify the mileage as genuine e.g. look at teh mileage shown on the first service docs in the service book, hopefully they show 8k miles or thereabouts at service 1.

I'd hold out for one you're happy with. What's your budget if you don't mind me asking?

Re: Potential purchase, couple of questions.
Thanks guys this is all reassuring. I'll check the 8k miles on the service history to make sure. It's still a little out of my price range but it's been in the place months now and they've reduced it once already. I'm lurking in the shadows waiting for another reduction.
Yeah I think they should be servicing it before selling it if the lights on. Or if not knocking some money off!
RW1 those sill covers looks pretty good I think I'll look into getting some of them if I go for it.
Thanks again everyone.

15 max tbh. Ideally was after something for a little less. But they're hard to come by unless it's a none VW dealer/private seller.Deacon wrote:I'd hold out for one you're happy with. What's your budget if you don't mind me asking?
I kinda had my heart set on a Candy with the sunroof. But most which have the roof are 16+ and only come along rarely. So I guess I may have to stop being so picky.
Re: Potential purchase, couple of questions.
Found a few on autotrader from dealers in white with sunroof upto 40k miles and max £15k budget. There was quite a nice looking one at hilton garage with 20 odd k on it for £14900 ishBunnyJen wrote:15 max tbh. Ideally was after something for a little less. I think I've seen that one actually. Looks nice. I just feel like as this is the most I have ever spent on a car should I buy form a VW dealer? Will I have more protection if something goes wrong? :/

I traded my 58 in to a non-VW dealer a couple of months back, not a thing wrong with it and that was a tiny car for someone was within that price range too. I'd go on mileage and how well it appears to have been looked after far more than age, as in reality the spec has varied very little in that time.BunnyJen wrote:I think I've seen that one actually. Re: Potential purchase, couple of questions.
Cool thanks Thommohawk that's good to know. This one seems to be pretty low miles but even thought it's got a fair few scratches it's a damn nice car....I'll hold on a bit longer and see if they drop it then make them an offer if they do.Thommohawk wrote:I traded my 58 in to a non-VW dealer a couple of months back, not a thing wrong with it and that was a tiny car for someone was within that price range too.
