Rear boot creak

Post by BadBoy »

I've had this creak for some time now and my car has been into Vw twice but they don't know what the issue is and want me to book it in again to figure it out.

I have done a search and there is no conclusive answer other than it may be the rear shock top mounts.

The creak happens when I turn or I go up an incline, seems to be when the chassis is under stress and it is quite a loud annoying creak and to top it the rear shelve rattles all the time.

Any ideas?

Get some new boot stops... they cost £4 each. Or get vw to replace them under warranty.

I have adjusted the boot stops numerous times but the creak is still apparent. Would replacing these really fix the problem?

My boot stops were knackered... felt OK so I spent ages taking panels out trying to find problem. Fitted loads of sound proofing etc...still there.

Then replaced boot stops... sound went.

Try taking boot stops out completely and drive around... see if creaking has gone.

New boot poppers never helped any other ideas, its the off side which creaks?

The control unit for the rear parking sensors is located on the offside in the boot behind the panel. I've heard that they can come loose and knock / creak

The other one with creaking if it can't be found inside is the spot welding of the bodywork has failed, given "seems to be when the chassis is under stress and it is quite a loud annoying creak". I seem to recall two instances, one of which was this ..... Faulty Spot Welding in the Bodywork Panels.

For the parcel shelf, check the rubber foam stops are still fitted to the rear hatch cover panel which hold it in place when the rear hatch is closed.

Also try fitting some Velcro patches (eye soft half) inside the lower part of the hinge mounting sockets on either side.

Mine still creaks like a Spanish Galleon despite them doing the bootstops and the parking sensor controller etc isn't rattling. It seems most prevalent for the first second of moderate acceleration. I will have to get them to check out the spot welds.

There is a hole in the end where you can fit an allen key (3mm I believe) and loosen the mechanism enough to pull out and re-tighten.

After a lot of fiddling around with the boot stops, I finally killed the creak on mine. Left side pushed all the way in and right side out 2 clicks - don't rely on your boot lid being completely straight/symmetrical - mine must be on slightly wonky. When both boot stops were adjusted out the same, there was bounce on the RHS corner where no boot-stop contact was made.

I really hate the huge gap between back end and boot where the 2 meet - should there really be such a big gap that you can see the internals of the boot lid?

Not your tailgate. Thats in line with the body being bent from the right hand rear shunt last October. Bodywork is distorted, ie, the panel has been pulled down a little where the right hand stop sits cos the underlying bumper area was stoved inwards.

May also explain why you can see a lot of the rear hatch side area if its the right hand side.

My boot lid has always creaked (from day 1 of ownership), and there has always been a big gap between body and boot, also body and bonnet. I think the repair might have exasperated it a little - perhaps they didn't put the tailgate back on quite as square as the factory would've liked to have done (we're talking about being 2mm out at most). Prior to the accident I had tried to adjust the boot-stops out in tandem and still got the creak, which suggests to me that the bootlid was never quite square on the body and perhaps the repairers put it back on right where it had always been.

From all that I think the shunt has little to do with my creaking bootlid. There was nothing bent (bodywork-wise) in my accident apart from the rear quarter panel and the far edge of the bumper assembly. The rear wheel took the brunt of the impact.

The panel gaps on the Roc with the bonnet and bootlid have always been the worst aesthetic thing for me - 2 previous MK5 Golfs had tiny panel gaps and the brochure for the Golf used to boast about it's tight fitting panels.. I really don't think that my body/bootlid gap was any bigger after the accident repair than before it. My Bonnet isn't on completely straight - it overhangs the wing by about 2mm on one side. I really do think that a German made Golf appears to be better assembled than a Portuguese assembled Roc after having had 2 of each and both Rocs have creaked and had big panel gaps.
