I'm not really understanding why people dislike the TDI so much, especially the new common rail version which is a very good engine.

I had a test drive today in a Scirocco 1.4TSI and I must say I really didn't like the engine. The engine is very smmoth but It feels seriously underpowered for the car and you really need to work it to get any kind of performance out of it.
Now maybe I had too high expectations for it, as all the reviews and people on the forums talk about how good it is, but I currently drive an Ibiza Cupra TDI which is 160bhp and the 1.4 doesn't in anyway come close to the performance I get from my Cupra.

Engine aside I do have a few issues with the car. First things first, visability is somewhat of a joke. There are quite a few blinds spots and the rear window is tiny. Also the roof seems to come down quite far above the door which is off putting at first and makes it quite dark inside the car. The steering could do with abit more feedback and maybe even abit sharper too (dealer told me there are 5 settings for the steering which they can change via the computer).
Don't get me wrong though, I did like the car and I'm seriously thinking of getting one when the 170bhp tdi comes out.
I drove a passat cc 140bhp TDI last week and I was actually surprised how quick it was and how freely the engine seemed to rev, so I have high hopes for the 170bhp TDI when it eventually comes to the Scirocco.

I think you will find that the vast majority of people on here, talking about how good the TSI engine is are talking about the 2.0, not the 1.4.

Interesting, so if its that quick why the re-map, as for the race lets go for a distance race on one tank of fuel.

Each type of engine has its plus points, when I drove the pertol tsi I agree its very quick but it had to be rev'd, the heating oil version as you call it is all about torque its a slow reving engine but it has bags of grunt which for everyday driving I like, if I thought the tsi had a massive performance advantage I'd have bought one, but it doesn't so I didn't.

There is a big difference in performance, its naive to think there isnt! I'm guessing he wants a re-map because he wants to go even faster, also I have retunrd 40 mpg since the re-map during motorway driving, i think its because the car gets up to speed faster.

Each to their own though and I'm glad you like your car :)

thanks ctr your right there is a huge difference, and my reason for a remap is i think the car can cope with more power than the 200 it has as standard, it must be pretty damn boring with just 140 on tap yawn yawn zzzz zzzzzzz zzzzzzzzz at least you have the clatter of your oil burner engine to keep you awake, i think vw do ear plugs as an option and tissues for when the 2.o tsi passes you,

I guess I can understand thinking that the 140bhp tdi doesn't belong in the scirocco, but I do think that the 170bhp tdi makes sense.
It would give you a great handling car with some decent performance and can be economical too (for reference I was only getting 20-21mpg in the 1.4TSI when I test drove it, which genuinely surprised me being that poor).

I think its traditional that there will be those off u who will slag off diesel engines, your either get on with them or u dont but theres no reason to gang up on those who chose to go for the car based on financial reasons rather than for out and out power.

Its your choice.

My previous cars have been :- 360hp CTR, 400bhp Evo 9 and until very recently a E55 AMG

Mileage on full tank :-

CTR worst:- 86 Miles
CTR Best:- 160

Evo Worst:- 60 miles
Evo Best:- 180 miles

E55 average:- 13mpg.

In short, tuning petrol engines make them drink far much more fuel. I've been there and done it, i spent over 15k tuning my ctr only to have to fill up on average twice just to get to london, and the same on the way back. If u can handle that then great.

I bought the car because i liked the fact it was a VW, and because i liked the styling. When i test drove the TSI, i actually thought it felt slow (sorry guys) so IN MY OPINION if i'm going to end up with a slow VW, then i may aswell go for an economical one and then I’ll start to tune it.

Those of u chaps who have TSI’sgreat, but if u are going to give an INFORMED opinion on the diesel, then at least drive 1 before u slag it off.

I have nothing concrete yet, but the TDI Roc is averaging about 45mpg at the mo and once mapped if i get around 38 - 40mpg then i'll be happy.

I am happy with the car and even though it isn't a 200hp tsi, i can do the same tuning to a TDI as a TSI prob end up with similar torque figures, without ripping up clutches and also have better running costs.

But i bought my TDI to prove a point, i own a nitrous oxide business, and with diesel tuning being the hottest topic in the UK tuning market at the moment, it made sense to me to go down that route. Diesel engines are also practically bullit proof when it comes to nitrous oxide, unlike petrol engines, but thats my bag.

Scirrocco rocket, your obviously wanting to enter some type of dick measuring contest. I'll quite happily fit a kit to klippie's diesel if he wants along with 150hp jetting and u 2 can let it rip down at pod, and we can post the results on the forum for every 1 to see. Really mate, grow up, you got to be on the positive side of 20, and trying to belittle someone on a public forum isn't really polite, and definitely not a way to make friends and influence people.

Look, at the end off the day, i am going to defend the TDI as i have 1 just as any proud TSI owner will defend their's, but it seems that were all missing the point. The reason we all joined the forum is because of the car, it isnt the TSI forum, or the TDI forum its the Scirroccocentral forum, and whichever engine u choose, whether it be the 1.4 the 2.0 TDI or 2.0 TSI it's all good.

i have done 35k of diesel miles in a golf and 650miles in the petrol but after the 2.0tsi id never go back to a diesel, i love how smooth and quiet the engine is, plus in the back of your mind you know you have 200ps to play with if needed, my golf was debadged had 18"rs4 alloys so it looked quite sporty but youngsters would sit up your backside trying to pass or looking for a race. in the 2.0tsi sciroc the come flying up behind and just give up and dont try to pass, for me its a fantastic feeling im sure 2.0tsi owners will know what i mean, ive said this before on here, i had two guys come to buy my old alloys one said is that your car, yes i said the other one says wow and and its the 2.0 tsi aswell. i cant see that happening with a oil burner, if you can affoard it go 2.0tsi, im sorry to say this but a diesel has no place in the scirocco , tractors and skoda,s only please

The 2.0tsi very smooth engine, but to be honest you really can't compare the old 1.9tdi or 2.0tdi engines to the new 2.0 common rail unit.
I would honestly say the new common rail diesel is the most petrol like diesel I've ever driven. It is very smooth, quiet and rev's surprisingly freely. My only real issue with it when I drove it was because the engine is now so smooth, it doesn't feel as torquey or as quick as the older units, until you look at the speedo that is. (its possible when the 170bhp tdi comes to the scirocco it will resolve this issue)

I do agree the 2.0tsi is a fantastic engine and is much nicer to drive than any diesel out there at the moment, but considering the progress VW have made with the new common rail tdi, their next major revision of their diesel engines could lead to an engine that is as good as the 2.0tsi is today.

An interesting twist to my theory however, is that I read somewhere that VW were developing a petrol engine that didn't use spark plugs and worked like a diesel engine to combust the fuel as this gives the engine the torque characteristics and economy of a diesel and the cleaner emissions of a petrol.

Thanks for the offer mate...but when I have the need for real performance I use my other form of transport that's good for a 100 in under 8 sec its got two wheels mind you, cars just become mobile chicanes... ;)

Seriously, I can't wait to get my Scirocco, it doesn’t matter what engine it has because they way it looks and handles more than makes up for any performance or fuel consumption deficiencies it may have…roll on May... :hyper:

all im doing is defending my choice of engine the 2.0tsi, the 1.4 boys are saying just wait till i get a remap bye bye 2.otsi and i cant wait to see the faces of the 2.0tsi owners when a 1.4 passes them, same with the diesel boys our diesels have tons more torque and are faster thu the gears and how much faster they are 50-80mph and still get a million miles to the gallon, seems you can dish it out but cant take it, i fully intend to buy the studie r / r20t model when it arrives, let me guess the diesel and 1.4 will beat it at something, im done here you can argue about how good your 1.4 and diesels are till the cows come home but deep down you all know at this monent in time the 2.0tsi rules the roost so just deal with it, by the way when ordering my car i asked my dealer for the best engine and model he said that would be the 2.0tsi in gt spec hmmmmmmmm was he wrong???????????

i've driven the common rail audi when i had a loaner, thought i was going to stain the seats when i nearly p##d my pants pulling out of a junction given its performance (deficit) took some getting used to again, my dealer always used to laugh at my respone to the loaner question (ie its a bit slow), fortunatley i am out of the company car game, if i went diesel it would probably have a blue and white propeller badge on it

my tsi will no doubt make me poorer, i know i visit the petrol station more, i know i'm racking up the double club points to fill its thirst for 99 unleaded, i know its been tinkered with, but its not about the money, its that big grin on your face when a new shape a4 tdi is attached to your bumper going through road works, the magic black and white signs appear and you realise who quickly he disappears from the rear view mirror and you have to spot him in wing mirrors as you reach 70 :D

I'm up for that 8) Give me till summer to have the car ready,

I have also come from the land of jap tuning CTR, S2k and 400 Bhp 410 ft lbs Evo VII RS Sprint ;) Mind you thats nothing compared to what most the guys are running over at the MLR these days.

The diesel cars are very good and I'm not slagging them off but they aren't going to be as quick as petrol units, especially around a track with such a limited rev band, santa pod possibly but the second anyone on here straps the K04 turbo off the TTS or out of the S3 in place and the petrol is going to take off! I'm yet to decide what to do as I said after the previous cars I wouldnt do to much to my car but you know what the tuning bug is like.

Horses for courses, but could you imagine a Diesel Evo?? I guess thats all that some of the guys are saying, they would have preferred the scirocco to be wholly exclusive to a performace model not water the brand down to attract people looking for a car fitted around a budget etc

I will pop up tomy local VW dealer and book a test drive in the TDi as I have only got the Audi A3 to compare it too which I went round the Nurburgring in :) I just imagined it would have been the same :)
