Wheel noise on full lock
Hi all,
Just noticed today when driving around a car park that on full lock there is something similar to a rubbing noise coming from the front. Has anyone else had this? It's very wet out so I though it could just be the Scirocco version of squeal which you get when it's wet. Definately keeping an eye on it.
Cheers
Gary

Re: Wheel noise on full lock
Cheers for the info but definately not a knocking/twanging noise. I' actually thinking it's just where the tyres distort at the edges and rub on the tarmac but just wanted to check for known issues. Just backed into my driveway and the road is one of these "gripfibre" gritted ones and it made a different noise but does sound like it could be edges of tyre on the rough road surface.
It's weird as It's only happened today and it might be os it's horrifically wet.
Hopefully it is nothing and I'm worrying too much. Until I get to try it out in the dry or on a grippy surface (not gritty gripfibre or skiddy carpark) I guess I won't know.

Problem gone. Dried up today. Either a wheel on wet tarmac noise or maybe I got water in a component when I drove through a foot of water on the flooded A23.
Cheers all.

Re: Wheel noise on full lock
Hi to all on this excellent forum. Ive just registered with the forum and enjoyed reading all the usefull posts, especially the wastegate rattle, which i had done. Ive always had the rubbing sound on full lock but strictly ONLY IN WET CONDITIONS. Ive read mixed reasons for this, namely tyres on wet tarmac wile turning or the pleets on cv gloves rubbing when wet and distorted ! I know there cant be anything wrong since no noise in dry and surely all sciroccos and gtis make this noise in the wet at full lock. Thanks in advance for any replys.

Re: Wheel noise on full lock
I don't have it.
VW dealers will not do anything as its considered normal and does not affect component life. They are instructed not to repair. Dealers will be refused a warranty claim, so won't get paid for the work.
Putting a product on like silicon grease or bearing grease may remove the effect as has been posted on other forums but the grit/road dust will be picked up which will rub the boots and cause punctures in the rubber. Plus there may be negative interaction with the grease used and the rubber boots. Then black CV joint grease leaks out (small black flecks on the inside face of the front wheels is the first clue to that failure).

Thanks RW1 for reply. So, technically, theres nothing wrong then ? Always done it in wet....nothing in dry ! Ive heard of a lot of occurences of this noise. Could it be due to different rubber cv gloves on gt models ? Strange ! Thank u again RW1.

Mechanically, nothing wrong.drfluffhill1 wrote: So, technically, theres nothing wrong then ?
Sciroccos after early December 2009 depending on the engine installed have a revised boot part. 2.0TSi was one engine. Not a GT spec related change more related to engine and not only the 2.0 ltr, 1.4Ltr 122PS had a change at the same time but not the 160PS at all.drfluffhill1 wrote: Could it be due to different rubber cv gloves on gt models ?
I wash down (and inspect) the running gear (driveshafts, boots, shocks etc) with Wash Car Shampoo every 3 months. Maybe the wax residue (DoDo Sour Power) which I don't rinse off is sufficient to prevent the noise
I'm inclined to view it as a general observation as VW have not targetted specific Sciroccos.

Thanks again RW1 for your prompt and very knowledgable reply. You've reassured me and maybe i'll try the wash down which you do ! Thanks again.
