Squeak when shifting gears

Post by langum25 »

I rarely post on here but will start posting more now I own my Roc.

I have recently discovered a squeak when shifting gears, it's not that loud but I just find it strange. It seems to happen just as the clutch engages the gear.

Does anyone else have this.

I own a 10 plate 1.4 160 if that helps.

I used to have something similar on my Audi A3 (08). In the end I traced it to the cluch pedal - just a thought?

Langum, that sounds like it is most likely the 'hamster squeak'/whistle which is related to the supercharger pulley/water pump ( http://www.sciroccocentral.co.uk/forum/ ... =20#p18253" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) how many miles have you got on the clock?
if it is it should go after a few thousand miles, they did try to redesign it so it didn't squeak but iirc it made it worse.
my distraction technique involved changing gear at different times and turning the radio up a little (& possibly some bad singing ;) :)

(looks like you need to update your profile now you've got a 1.4 :) )

Thanks, I'll update my profile. That was the one I was getting originally.

There's just over 14000 on the clock.

There's a video on that topic and it's exactly that noise. I'm sure it's only when the clutch passes the biting point. Its as though there is something that just needs oiled.

Do you know if a VW garage will fix this...... Hopefully under warranty? :)

Thanks

If it is the Supercharger clutch squeak, then they can replace with a new water pump unit/clutch unit. It is claimable by the dealership as a warranty repair. There is a good possibility the new one will do the same about 2k to 5k miles after fitment. They haven't updated the part since January 2010 and replacements still do it but it seems less prone to happen with the new clutch lining material introduced in Jan'10.

It goes with time but at 14,000 miles, it should be diminishing/gone. Mine went at about 5,000 miles, which was fairly quick to dissappear. Some clutches in the unit seem to persist and not quieten down.

There's no mechanical damage going on, just an irritating squeak.

squeaky/creaky clutch pedal on mine (like an old door opening in a horror movie!). Try depressing the clutch pedal with the car off and see if it squeaks.

I get a small noise when changing to 5th, but I think that is something in the gearbox stick part rubbing, if you have the radio on you can't hear it.

Squeaking from engine bay when pressing clutch???

Post by dadavies90 »

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone can shed some light on a problem I am experiencing with my 1.4tsi 160 scirocco. When the clutch is pressed down there is a loud squeaking noise from the engine bay, what could this be? It's done 28000 miles of that makes a difference. All comments welcome.

Thanks
