Hello all,
Having ordered the GT 140 TDi, I just wondered how people who actually own one are finding them?
Part of this post is that I am massively bored at work

lol.
Any review would be welcome.... I have already put the money aside to have the Bluefin power upgrade giving it ever so slighly above 170 bhp
Thanks !

Having only had the car a couple of weeks - I think it's great, but then I'm coming from a Smart so anything's going to be an improvement power-wise.
The common rail engine is a lot quieter than the previous PD units VW were using, it's never going to beat the TSI from a standing start but I find the 140 is enough for my journeys - cross town commute and occasional dual carriageway/motorway cruises on longer journeys. I might remap with a Bluefin in future, but for the moment it'll do as standard.

Thanks for the reply, I used to have a Golf Mk4 150 Gt TDi, that had the PD unit and I found that excellent so if the
common rail is quieter then thats all good.
I'm not going for the Bluefin straight away, im going to run the engine in first and use it for a while then get it done.

Ive had the 2.0TDI 140 PD Golf, then the 170 PD Golf, and now the 2.0TDI 140 CR Scirocco.
I haven't driven the 170CR but I can tell you that the 140 CR unit is much better than the 140 PD unit. There's a much wider power band, smoother delivery of that power, and it's a lot quieter and cleaner.
My 170 PD was plagued with warranty issues, but it was quick once you got going. It had so much power that it couldn't put it all down from a standstill. Trying to pull away quickly from a roundabout was a hazard - give it more than 1/2 throttle from standstill and it would just spin on the spot.
From 30-80mph there is very little difference in acceleration between my old 170PD and the new 140CR (judging by a landmark sign from a slip road I use to accelerate onto dual carriageway near my house with) through the gears, but try putting your foot down in 6th gear at 70mph and the difference between the 2 engines is huge - you really need to knock it down to 4th more often in the 140 CR unit.
I personally don't miss the 170 unit, I don't think there's enough grip to use all that torque. Just look at the 0-60 time between a Scirocco/Golf 170: 8.1s, 0 to 60, and a TT with the same engine: 7.5s. The TT has quattro, so that extra grip through 4wd has a lot of impact with the 170CR unit's acceleration from standstill.
VW are charging too much for the 170 unit - should it really cost £400 more than a 2.0TSI? A slightly bigger turbo and a remap don't add up to £940 over the 140 unit.
I get around 51mpg indicated on an 11 mile commute to work on varied roads and 57mpg on long motorway cruises at a pretty constant 80mph in the 140CR.

Brilliant review, thanks for that, makes me feel alot easier about my choice!
Once I have had the car, used it a bit, i'll decide whether to go for the Bluefin upgrade or not..
I'm liking the MPG figures also!

Totally agree with what maisbitt said. I had the old PD version of the 140 TDI in an A3 and it was much louder and aggressive with it's power delivery. The CR TDI is much smoother and better to live with.
I'm sure if you are looking for something lightening quick it isn't really going to be to your taste, but I'm really happy withthe balance between power and economy. I'm also getting similar MPG figures to maisbitt so the fuel cost is pretty decent, especially with Petrol and Diesel prices practically the same at present.

Yeah im not after anything lightening quick, im more a fan of in-gear acceleration, so it's more the torque, which diesels have plenty of!
I'll be happy!

I'am delighted with mine after its initial problem the new engine is freeing up nicely its got plenty of torque and gets over 50mpg so its the best of both worlds, I'll agree to what’s previously been said the CR is very quiet compared to the PD engines plus there's no great clouds of smoke out the back either thanks to the
diesel particulate filter...
I think you'll be quite happy with your 140 when it arrives...

I think maybe the Bluefin may sort out the power and make it more flexible.

I'm chuffed with mine, its got 360 miles on it and it has as much go as my old A4 170 tdi. I wouldnt even consider chipping till at least 10,000 miles because the engine will just keep loosening up and improving. I drove a brand new A3 last year which had about 1000 mile on it, and recently drove it again and its got 16,000 on it now, and the difference is like day and night. Its my dads, and he was thinnking of chipping it, but isnt going to now because its improved so much with the mileage. But ye, absolutely delighted with my 140, and so far its doing 40 mpg on short runs and over 50 on long runs, and I dont hang about!!

We've now got a 170 ps DSG version and it goes like a rocket.....
We only got it a weekago last Thursday and it's already got over 600 miles on the clock and that's just going around and enjoying it.

Previously we had a BMW 120 DM Sport and the Scirocco is much better.
My wife thinks the Scirocco is a cross between the Crossfire that she had and the BMW but much morew efficient of fuel...
