Scirocco (59) 2.0 TSI 197 Engine tapping/pillar rattle??

Post by Danscirocco »

Yo guys havent visited for ages, but over the last few months ive been having probs with my ROC :(

Well the first is a b-pillar rattle behind my ear when driving over a course of a year and a half, VW have looked at this three times and its in at the moment for its fourth check. Its sounds like glass tapping somewhere, however the back right window and drivers windows are solid. It is strange as well as it doesnt do it all the time, and sometimes i cant prove to the mechanic, however i think hes heard it on one of my visits, so he does know what im on about.
Has anyone had this annoying glass tapping sound, behind the drivers ear?

Anyway my main problem which has peeved me off the most, is just before xmas, i noticed that the engine while idling was making a fast tapping sound, i hadnt noticed this before, and when you put your ear to the front of the main engine block sounds from inside and quite loud. So i took it in before xmas and got the mechanic to look at it and the rattle again, which they tightened the door latch (for a 3rd time) They came back and said that some guide rail (cant remember the name) plastic little thing had fractured, which they changed, and replaced the fuel sump. However when i got it back the sound was still there, so as i was unconvinced i took it back and said could i listen to another scirocco, allbeit a newer one, it did make the same fast tapping sound from the engine (i think). I was damn sure the engine was quiter than that when i bought it, it sounds like a sewing machine at the moment!!! When i spoke to the service manager i said i was unhappy with a 22k Volkswagen giving me this amount of grief and would like some sort of compensation, after offering me some theatre tickets, i finally got a free service from them. (third year) As well they sent me an expensive box of thornton chocs for xmas as a apology.

The rattle is still there..........

Anyway a few days after it going in, i was getting a smell of oil through the heaters. Not all the time, but just when the car had been cold for a long time (overnight etc) Theres is now a puddle of oil on my drive!!!!

Now the car is in as i write this, and they have told me that the fuel sump wasnt sealed properly, and the chain guide rail has been replaced!!! They havnt got back to me about rattle yet, but im to hear later today.

I have apporached the Service/business manager again and yet again vented my disatisfaction for VWs relaibility at the moment, and have been tempted to go to a rival brand. They offered me 1700 off a new scirocco but i declined and said ill only worry about that one. So im in talks with getting some extra warranty, to give me piece of mind with my VW for another year (one year left factory warranty) as this specific dealer seems to be not up to satisfaction. I must admit they have been very apologetic and sincere, and now are greeting me at the door as i last walked in, they are treating me like royalty at the moment. But im still unhappy, i went to VW for reliability, and i know not every cars perfect, and i expect one visit for a new car, but the amount i have done its upsetting.

I love my scirocco it looks great -goes great -and is great just im worried about, out of warranty costs and its reliability..

**UPDATE**

They have sealed fuel sump as estimated and stopped OIL leak from observation. The rattle im not sure they did fix, ill find out when i pick it up. But they have offered me an extra years full warranty as piece of mind. Im quite reassured by this. Hopefully will give me worry-free motoring, and if they have confidence in their product this should cost them nothing..

Hopefully i can start to enjoy my Roc again, like i did when i first bought it :))))

Well got my car back friday nite, and given it a lot of driving over weekend. im glad to say its like new again, no oil smell Definitly NO oil leaking anymore, and I THINK (pray lol) the rattles gone. Although the dealer did say it could be "flexing" in the chassis common with performance cars on stiff springs or setup, but havent heard it since friday!!

ALso they gave me a full extra years warranty... Vw have made me feel a little more confident in them.. even after sales they can look after you!! although, i did have to do a little chasing.

I have been seriously contemplating PX this in for a guilietta Cloverleaf as well, getting quotes test drives and all... but isnt that out of the fryin pan into the fire some might say lol!!

but think ill keep the VW now, its making me smile again.

Cheers

Hi, bit late to this thread I know but yes, I have had a rattle from behind my right ear (in the B pillar trim) ever since my Roc was 2 weeks old. I have tried wedging bits of felt in behind the plastic box section pillar trim as this seems to be quite loose. This has improved things but the rattle, though a lesser one, still irritates me sometimes. Shame as I have had no other real problems with the car, other than a faulty drivers window switch, which they replaced immediately!
