Dealer 3% credit card fee
After not charging or mentioning a credit card fee to take my deposit, the dealer is telling me there will be a fee for paying by credit card when I come to settle the rest of the balance.
Is this usual? The fee wasn't mentioned anywhere to me before.

Re: Dealer 3% credit card fee
normally they have a floor sales limit of say 1k. They then usually charge for values in excess of this.

Pretty standard these days. Usually no fee for a debit card if that's an option for you.

Yeah I was gonna try and rack up some cheeky clubcard points until I read that. Although the paper work I had said 2.5%
Re: Dealer 3% credit card fee
its common practice given they get hit with the dealer commission from visa/mastercard
its slightly weird when you do this, given the large figure on the screen, simply chip and pin and there you goEvil Derboy wrote:Pretty standard these days. Usually no fee for a debit card if that's an option for you.

Re: Dealer 3% credit card fee
Think it's a bit random to be honest. The dealer sales guy told me that he had a guy in buying a new car for his misses and one of the questions was "what was the last transaction on your account". The guy answered "a credit of £2.4 million! The guy had just sold his company to someone!"

In that case I'll leave it and see what happens on the day.. I guess by the time I'm driving back home I'm not going to really have been bothered too much by answering a few questions.

Re: Dealer 3% credit card fee
My dealer also had a 1% charge for payments over £1,000, so paid by debit card after transfering the funds into my bank account. When the transaction was going through, the dealer had to call the bank for a security check, but the bank never asked to speak with me!
Also, good news for you regarding your part credit card part-payment. You are now 100% protected by the credit card company for the entire purchase price of your car.

I put £5k on credit card on both the Scirocco and Tiguan for cash back purposes only. No fees were charged on either occasion.

PML Yeah they do ask you those sort of questions.Ibanez33 wrote:Is there a way to notify the bank in advance as I was planning to pay using my debit card and the last thing I want if have remember the what the hell my first pet was called or what ever other nonsense they'll ask?
Paid the balance of mine on my debit card. Did seem weird paying out £18K by just tapping in a 4 number code.
And I did get the security questions call from the bank before the transaction went through. Bit nervous as I didn't want the collection to stall just because I couldn't remember a simple question.
Lot of places charge you now if you pay be credit card - airlines and Ikea irritate me the most.

Re: Dealer 3% credit card fee
I too had the security questions.
I believe it's 1:6 transactions over approx £3k get referred for additional security.

Re: Dealer 3% credit card fee
It's a bit more complicated than that. I work in banking fraud (preventing it, not doing it!) and we're continuously building new rules to highlight possible fraudulent transactions. There's a huge number of variables that are assessed and the fraud system will weigh things up and either approve/decline/refer the transaction. Different banks will run with different rules so what causes a security check will vary from bank to bank. In fact, as banks keep changing the rules something that caused a secuirty check one week on your card, might not the next.retsila wrote:I too had the security questions.

I would always recommend telling your bank in advance if you are making a large purchase, but keep in mind you might still have to go through a few secuirty questions at the time regardless.

Re: Dealer 3% credit card fee
I just paid a £3k deposit today via credit card...i've tried to look through the finance terms & conditions but there's nothing in there about a 3% fee!! So i hope i've avoided fees like ulittleyellowspider wrote:I put £5k on credit card on both the Scirocco and Tiguan for cash back purposes only. No fees were charged on either occasion.

Re: Dealer 3% credit card fee
See I was told about a charge if I pay by credit card - and looking at my documents it says 2.5% will be charge.
