Project Timing chain

Postby Jimjimjim » Wed Sep 02, 2020 8:27 pm

So my timing chain stretched and jumped so I'm having a go at fixing it... I'll post updates in the thread as I go.

Finally got the cylinder head off after delays as I needed tools for the crank and the polydrive/ribe M10 cylinder head bolt socket.

Valves are bent as expected. The pistons seem fine but there was a bit of damage from the chain on the lower timing cover which I thought was interesting.

Just collected my cylinder head after getting it rebuilt with new valves! I thought it was best off letting someone who knows what they are doing and has the right machining tools do it. I'm really happy with it.

I called 3 dealerships for the price of cylinder head bolts and they want £8.39 each x10 £83.90..... Elring ones are £30 - 40 but people rave about sticking with the genuine ones.

This took ages to clean all the sealant off the sump pan

New head gasket. I used an elring gasket kit for £86 from euro car parts

Practice run timing it up before I seal the rocker cover down. That's the new timing chain and guides.

Just got this lower timing chain cover today from autodoc for £53 with delivery. Its elring oem and I've used official parts for most of this so far but volkswagen wanted £97 for theirs... its just a metal plate...

IT'S IN!! Now that was a struggle. Trying to get it to line up to the 3 engine mounts without it breaking itself or anything else was a pain. I'd love to know why both mounts for the engine crane are on the same side of the engine so it constantly tilts towards the car.

10 hours today to get everything connected up so if nothing stupid happens a test start tomorrow.....

£16 5mx8m tarp was the best thing I've bought for this lol. It was raining hard and here I am sitting on my rug torquing bolts outside.
