Central jacking points

Post by Piso »

Hi, I have a question. Does the Scirocco have central front and rear jacking points? I need to put it on Jack stands for the first time and I don't know how. I looked under the car and I saw two spots (see photos). Is it safe to lift it from those points (front first) so to gain access to the factory lifting points and be able to put the jack stands there? How do you guys do it? Thanks!

Firstly I would never lift the Scirocco as a whole front or rear on one single lifting point (Jacking points as shown or sub-chassis points or jack pads - when fitted). Damage can occur.

Do it on level ground!

These jacking points used on the running gear/suspension mounting points are not official VW lift points. Only the 4 car-jacking points indicated by the "v" notches on the sills are recognised by VW.

Here's how I have done it with axle stands. The aim is to lift one corner at a time with the hydraulic jack. Then slip the axle stand under the Scirocco's jacking point where the "v" notches in the body sills point to. Making sure the axle stand is centrally placed along the Scirocco' jack point length at all four car-jack points.

On all lift points, make sure your hydraulic jack head is protected against damaging the Scirocco's Running Gear/Chassis comonents. I used packaging cardboard folded over to give double thickness.

Its a tight fit at each corner to get the hydraulic jack in position and then place the axle stand in place under the Scirocco's jacking point. So your hydraulic jack has to be narrow and very close up to the tyre tread face.

Its the same for left/right front or left/right rear as shown.

So in with the jack onto the rear bracket that holds the suspension. The mounting bolts shown in the first photo go straight through onto the body chassis. Hopefully your jack head is a "cup" type like mine and not a flat plate. If it's a flat plate head type , I'd suggest you pick up on the outer bolt head visible in the photo below. Use a block of wood with a pre-cut hole allow you to centralise the flat head under the bolt.

Initial jacking up..... Only lift the wheel and tyre off the ground next to the hydraulic jack sufficiently to get the axle stand in place. Do not raise the Scirocco in such a way as the other front tyre is lifted off the ground.

Now use the Scirocco normal car's jacking point as a resting point for the axle stand as indicated. Some more folded cardboard to protect.

Generally how the front axle is look as you finish getting the axle stand in place

Repeat for the other front side.

...........................................

Now the rear..... again, one wheel corner at a time off the ground. Jack tight in against the rear tyre's forward tread face. Locate the forward point of the rear suspension where it attaches to the inner sill with two bolts. Cup the mounting with the jack's lifting head. Raise until the axle stand will go under the Scirocco's rear jacking point as indicated by the "v" notch in the outer sill.

Repeat for the final 4th point on the opposite rear side.

...........................................

I would suggest you do the reverse order to take the car off the axle stands.

...........................................

Since these photos, I now have Jack Pads fitted which makes the exercise a whole lot easier without touching the running gear/suspension parts with the hydraulic jack. Again, only lift one corner of the car off the ground at a time.

Wow, couldn't ask for more! You should write a DIY how to guide. Thank you, I will try this way! :)
