The creak could well be just the tension in the handbrake mechanism. My car has made the same sound for virtually its whole life! The first sound seems dodgier imho and spring/shock or bearings would be worth a check.

VCDS is VAG-COM Diagnostic System, the gold-standard diagnostic software tool for VW (runs on a small computer plugged in under the dash) and should always be the first port of call for any problems.

Have you checked the condition of the battery? If it's below-par and the voltage isn't sufficient to start the car, the ECM link can be lost ('computer says no'). You need to get it onto a VAG (or compatible) diagnostic computer IMHO. My first reaction is that this could be an ignition coil problem, but the diagnostics will confirm any misfire (and identify the cylinder affected).

When you say 'no codes', is that just from the dash, or has it been hooked-up to a diagnostic computer since the problems started?

Update on this one: Error code U0100 was returned, 'Lost communication with ECM/PCM'. We cleared the error and everything seems fine now. My mechanic thought it was a transient problem caused by very hot conditions and a voltage dip on the battery. I'll be keeping the battery topped-up more frequent...

Could well be, the message doesn't come up immediately. I'm suspecting an earthing problem, but it's just a guess at this stage.
