Update on this - £190 later and the fault still exists. Garage replaced the sensor and cleaned the EGR and throttle body as per my previous post. Managed to get up to to a decent speed on the way home, still lacked power but neither the coil light or engine management came on. As advised by the gara...

Thanks Shak - the car is with a garage at the minute and I will mention this to him.
Currently he is swapping a sensor and has offered to clean the EGR valve and throttle body.
