Re: 1.4 TSI High oil consumption and exhaust smoke

For what it's worth - and it might not be a lot - my 1.4 did exactly the same, something I only noticed a while after having purchased it as 2 year old used. At the end of the 3rd year when it went for its MOT it failed on its emissions due to a faulty lambda sensor. Alternatively, is there any chan...

Re: 1.4 TSI 160 advice

The other big issue on the twinchargers fitted across the VAG range was the dry clutch burn-out. Pages and pages on this on the internet. Clutch was upgraded in 2013, so stick with a 13 plate and above.

Re: Scirocco 1.4TSI 160

13 plate should also have the upgraded dry clutch. Wouldn't touch a plate any earlier than this: the dry clutch issues on the 160s were pretty notorious. Presumably the upgrade fixed things.

Re: Possible sale of my beloved car.

I advertised my BMW F20 on Autotrader and Petrolheads. I went for the AT premium package (35 days, I think), as AT stats show that the average time to sell even the most popular cars is 21 days (3 weeks). I think I had about five (protected) phone calls or emails through AT over the first few weeks....

Re: 1.4 160 idle misfires :'(

That's a great result - well done! Standard advice for running is pretty much as provided: for the first 1000, keep below 4K rpm, vary the revs and most importantly ensure the car's up to temp. After 1000, begin to build up the revs. To stress, probably more harmful to labour the engine than to occa...

Re: 1.4 160 idle misfires :'(

Shouldn't they be paying the full bill? Agreed. Under the aforementioned Consumer Rights Act you shouldn't be paying anything! It is down to the garage you bought the car from to either repair it - at entirely their own expense - or give you a full refund. This isn't some optional thing they can ta...

Re: 1.4 TSI - An insight into just how bad the intake coking

Blower,

Do you think the use of fuel additives would do much to reduce the build up? I'm not expecting that these would prevent, just reduce somewhat. Would be interested in your view.

No longer own the 160, of course, but I'm thinking of my current DI car as I do mostly short journeys

Thanks

Re: Warranty 1.4 tsi 160

Thumbs up re mondial warranty - no quibbles with changing the dsg clutch on mine, as well as swapping out coils and injectors etc when looking to solve the emissions failure on my 2011 160. They even coughed up for a knackered suspension spring. Mind you, their position towards any claim might depen...

Re: Which scirocco to buy?

It's worth understanding the vocal minority rule - as stated above you only hear of the worst cases on the internet. Fact of the matter is, VW sell millions of engines world wide and they are (...ignoring recent silly emissions gaff) a very reputable company. If ALL of their 1.4 TSI engines blew up...

Re: Which scirocco to buy?

If you buy a 160 on anything less than a 2012 plate you run the significant risk of encountering engine problems.

If you buy a 160 dsg on anything less than a 2012 plate and which hasn't had the 2013 upgraded clutch pack then you will encounter clutch problems.

Re: dash cam wiring

Even on it's lowest setting it's hyper sensitive - it's a known 'issue' for this camera. I understand that the almost continual recording doesn't add much to the power drain, since the cam is always on, monitoring, anyway. The downside really is in recordings been overwritten within the limits of th...

Re: dash cam wiring

About to send mine back for a checkup... it seems to randomly reboot itself attimes (dashcam that is). Also, make sure you get a large SD card to use with it Have you ruled out intermittent power failure e.g as a result of borderline battery power? Car batteries are not designed to support extended...

BV 650-2 pluses:- - Form factor (assuming you want a no-screen camera) - for me, the major plus of this camera - Built in gps, wifi and iOS/android apps that are well-designed and easy to use - Reliable wifi connection (least with my set-up). Minuses: - Price, especially given that picture quality i...

Re: Car going back.. i think

Whilst I agree with Cuprabob in the round, there is no hiding the fact that the 1.4 160 is right up there with the cars that have known issues. But, as we've all said - there's risk in buying any used car, and you could be fine. You also have to wonder how many of the issues with the 160 have come t...

Re: Car going back.. i think

Just had my engine rebuilt due to cracked piston - £2400 is a decent hit to the pocket. That said it didn't affect all of the cars maybe get it in writing that if this common issue occurs VW warranty will cover everything (which it should) or pocket your money and wait for the next one to come in s...

Difficult situation to be in, and I feel for you - it's typical of the kind of situation I tend to find myself in! I have no wish to compound your situation but the fact is there would be a significant risk to the pocket in owning this car. But that's what is - a significant risk - rather than a def...
